feedback for presentation from Mike

Mike sent us an assessment sheet with his feedback for our presentation. The sheet has ratings by number, 10 being high and 1 being low, as well as brief comments from Mike. Here is what it has told me.

For knowledge and understanding of core materials we got a 7, which is slightly above average. We got the same score for Extent, quality and appropriateness of research, with Mike commenting 'Research evident but needs greater reflection on the presentations given by HOME'. As well as Conceptual grasp of issues, quality of arguments and ability to answer questions, where Mike commented 'Clear grasp of sustainability issues - not so much about issue of 'Perception'.

For design concepts we got a 6, which is average, and Mike commented 'good initial ideas but underdeveloped'. We also got a 6 for evolution of the ideas, with Mike saying 'Evidence of lots of initial ideas' 'But evolution of ideas was lacking visually'.

In the Quality of management section we got 7 for all the categories, with Mike just giving general feedback on how we did not introduce ourselves, did not have hand-outs, and not very many visuals.

We also got all 7s for the Quality of communication section, except for the confidence and fluency in English section, where we got a 6 because we did not reference to the semantic issue of crisis that HOME mentioned.

The overall feedback was:

"good evidence of preparation and engagement with the briefs central issues. The character idea had the greatest pull because of the accompanying visuals – but there was a sense that the ‘crisis’ aspect of the assignment was somehow lost - is this a concern? Should you be thinking about the key messages from the HOME team? Ask yourselves – will HOME want to adopt your idea? Will they be surprised/pleased at the thoroughness of your consideration and the ingenuity of your response. How will you know if your idea makes a positive contribution to raising awareness of HOME’s carbon neutrality profile? Are you meeting their aspirations to be leaders in this field? What about HOME’s concern with Transport? Are you going to target their chief concern
with the carbon issue around people travelling to and from HOME. Glenn – need to reflect on the claim that Cements ‘green’ and sustainable – I’m not so sure about this. Content within the APP is an issue that needs considering. Are your ideas radical enough?"

I agree with parts of what Mike said, however I believe that we don't always have to have hand-outs, as well as this being a pitch more than a full presentation, which is why we did not have that many visuals.

From this feedback I have learnt that for the final presentation we should introduce ourselves, have more visuals, speak more about the issues HOME focus on, and to reflect upon our research.

What I would change after doing the presentation

I have decided since I have now done the presentation and finalised the prototype that I would think of somethings that I would change and improve since hearing HOME's feedback and how I personally feel about the finished product. The first thing I would change is the animations, I would remake them so they had more things happening, maybe remove the black background on the live statistics. I would honestly just make them look more professional, as they look very amateur at the moment. The next thing I would do is I would add some sound to the video, this sound could be optional so if the screens are in a public space it would be silent, but if it is in a small confined space where it is okay to have sound it could be played, this is because it was quite dull and empty feeling without the sound. The kinds of sounds I would have is like for each different animation sounds that go along with it, such as for the plastic in oceans have water and bubbles popping, or for air pollutio...

Writing the research and design proposal document

After the presentation was finished we focused on the research and design proposal document. Since I had already almost finished my blog and other people in the group had not, I decide that I would offer to write most of it. I began by breaking down the topics that were specified in the brief. These were break down of the brief/what they wanted, sources of inspiration/design stylings, evolution of the project, final design proposal/idea, evaluation of work.  Then a few days later I broke down the sections further, this was so we would have more specific sections so its easier to write for. These were: Break down of brief/research on HOME, What HOME wanted/needed, Research into climate crisis, Sources of inspiration, Style sheet, Idea evolution, What we did, How we did it, What we wanted to get out of this project, What we think of our work, How we worked together, Things we would change since the presentation, Blog links. This left 178 words per topic. I began working o...

Style sheet

This was for the beginning of this blog, but Blogger deleted the post :( I put together a quick style sheet for our HOME project, this is just to help us ensure we're all using the same colours, fonts, and stylings for drawings and animations. I decided to do this as it is useful to show that we have thought about the stylings, and it will show the style for the research and design booklet without using any words. For the colour theme we used HOME's original colours, but added black and white. I added the 'drawing style' section as it helps us to stick with the stylings of the drawing. I also added the 'Shapes' section, as when I was working in industry we did not have this section on the style sheet and it really confused me and the marketing team as we did not know what style of shapes they wanted us to use. Also if we did not have this section, it could mean that there is inconsistencies in shapes over the prototype, such as if we use hexagons for one...
