Since talking to HOME, I wanted to look into hireable bikes. This is because HOME mentioned that one of the biggest issues that they want to tackle is transport. When I spoke to people about hireable bikes they said that Manchester used to have them, but no longer have them. Since Manchester no longer has them I decided to do some research into what happened to the bikes here, and the ones in London as they seem to have worked a lot better than here.
London:
I found this article on the bikes in London, and people ranking the different types. This article is useful as it shows all the different types of bikes, and what is good and bad about each type.
https://londonist.com/london/transport/ranking-all-of-london-s-hire-bikes
The bike types are:
- Santander Cycles
- Mobike
- Ofo
- Lime
- Jump
- Freebike
Mobike first came to London in September 2017, and have two types of bikes, their regular and their lite version.
Ofo is no longer in London, this is due to people throwing their bikes into rivers. After they left, Lime came to London, they are a company known for electric scooter, however they are illegal in London currently.
Most of these hireable bikes need you to download the app to be able to hire them, however most of the apps have been called outdated. Jump is different as it is run by UBER, they just have it integrated into the original app.
Most of the bikes cost a small amount for 5 mins, then it goes up per minute. For instance the Jump bikes cost £1 for 5 mins, then 12p per additional minute after that.
Manchester:
I then found a section on the 'The Greater Manchester' website that allows you to hire out bikes for extended amounts of time, this can be for you to try our bikes before you buy a bike for yourself.

I also found an article on why Mobike left Manchester.

"Mobike said that in July alone 10 per cent, or about 200, of its Manchester bikes were stolen or damaged"
